The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

David, a twelve year old boy, leads in this thrilling story. He bears the loss of his mom but hopes to elongate her lifespan by repeating things to an even number. When he hit a door, he would hit it twice, for an odd number would be unlucky. David repeats the same routine daily, but at the end his mom still perishes. This caused David to put pressure on himself, thinking that is was his fault for his mom’s loss.

His dad appears a young woman named Rose. Then in a blink of an eye, so does a baby boy. David’s dad soon marries the youthful woman and also brings up a new brother. David is irritated at his dad’s actions and resents Rose.

After a few months, David and his dad move to Rose’s house. It is much bigger than his own, with two stories. He is introduced to his new room, where he finds a great deal of cobwebs. But as he inspects more, he finds a bulk of books sitting on a dusty bookshelf. He opens some of them, skimming their thick, boring pages.

As he finishes the rows one by one, he finds a bundle of story tales. Stories were very meaningful to David, for his mom would tell him stories daily. He pulls the book out and starts scanning the story. David gets stuck in the book and peers at the authors name, which logs the name Jonathan.

Because this house, as well as the books, were passed down for many generations, he asks Rose for more knowledge of the author. They talk and enjoy themselves for the first time. But a few days later, they get into a big fight. David is grounded by his father, who is tired of David being in a bad attitude.

He goes to sleep that night, but soon hears someone calling to him. It sounds like…his mom’s voice.

“Help me!” exclaims his mom.

David dashes downstairs quietly as he can and finds the voice in the backyard.

“Mom?” he questions, hoping to communicate with her.

“Hurry!” she replies.

He finds the voice an entrance a few feet away. As he trots to the entrance, careful for traps, a German plane crashes at him. Luckily in the nick of time, David enters the mysterious portal and drifts away.

Can David handle wars, fights, tricks, fairytales, and still live? Find out when you read The Book of Lost Things.
