The Boston Tea Party started when the Massachusetts colonists disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea in the Boston Harbor. They protested the British Parliament’s Tea Act in 1773, a bill designed to save the East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax. This restricted the people in Massachusetts to only buy tea from the East India Company and not anywhere else. This was unfair because no one could start a company without the East India Company getting a cheaper price.
3 ships, the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver arrived at Boston Harbor, demanding that the tea be returned to England. However, the Massachusetts Governor, Thomas Hutchinson, refused. Samuel Adams organized the “tea party” with 60 members from his underground resistance group. Then, they sailed over to Boston Harbor and dumped 18,000 dollars worth of tea on December 16.
The Parliament, the government branch with the most power, was outraged by the destruction and enacted the Intolerable Acts in 1774. The Intolerable Acts were created to discipline and control the Massachusetts colonists. The Boston closed off merchant shipping, (a type of shipping that transports with a cargo or carries passengers for hire), and established a British military to help control the colonists. The colonists quickly established the first Continental Congress to consider a united Americans resistance to the British.
